Adding to Joe's Post

Joe already caught most of what we did on our way here, so I'm just going to add a few thoughts.

Dubai looked pretty cool. Everything is in English and Arabic. It was fun for me to try to find signs that I could read. I got the cognates and the few words that are the same in Dari.

Joe failed to mention that he was approached by a uhhhh... lady-of-the-night in the hotel. Interesting in a 5-star hotel. Apparently she finally understood that No means No when he mentioned my presence upstairs.

Flying into Kabul was weird on every level. The plane was cramped as Joe mentioned. We also flew over Iran. Finally, there was NOTHING under us for almost the entire flight. Just miles and miles of brown with no sign of human life. As we got closer to Kabul the mountains appeared - all brown & black. It looked like we were flying into something out of Lord of the Rings.

Random Thoughts on the Compound:

The air is clearer than I thought it would be.

The doors are freakin' heavy.

I did fine with the altitude until I got on the elliptical machine.

I finally understand and support Daylight Savings Time. The sun is FULLY UP by 4:30am

  1. Speaking of daylight savings time, what is the time difference? Like if it's noon in DC it is ____ in Kabul.

  2. We are 8.5 hours later than DC during Daylight Savings Time. So, 9.5 later than you... Don't ask about the half-hour. I don't know.

  3. 4:30? *feint* When does the sun go down?

I suppose this is good enough until I can actually SPEAK to you again.

  4. That's funny - I don't remember it being high altitude so I just checked it out and indeed it is higher altitude than Nairobi, and I defintely adjust everytime I come back here from trips (or maybe I'm always out of shape)
